Tricky Birthday?

My birthday week - my birthday is this coming Tuesday, September 18 - is rolling along swimmingly.  This past Thursday night, I kicked it off on my LIVE from The Basement online show on UStream, by playing my song 'Happy Birthday Olga,' which I obviously did not write as a tribute to myself, but which is...well, the only song about birthdays I have ever written.

This morning I worked on some music for a new song, that began popping into my fingers yesterday, and also wrote music and lyrics for another new song.  This one is dedicated to my Uncle Tom and his soon-to-be-new-bride Kathi.  I promised them back in July I would write a song for their wedding on October 6, which is only 3 weeks from now.  Fortunately for me, the chords, notes and words all arrived this morning.  I will not be revealing it in any way on the interwebs until after I play it live at the wedding, so you'll have to wait until at least October 7 to hear it.  Sorry.

Tonight, my dear sister Kelly is taking me out for a birthday dinner at one of our favorite spots, Pat's Pizza in the Old Port section of Portland, Maine.  If you have not been to this Pat's Pizza (it is a 'Maine chain,' for those of you unfamiliar), and you live anywhere near it, go - and, I promise you - you will not be sorry.  The food is incredible, the service is fantastic, the atmosphere inside is great, and the prices are crazy-reasonable.

After pizza, Kelly and I are going to see her favorite band of all-time, the Portland, Maine 4-man bluegrass outfit, Tricky Britches, who are playing Tucker's Music Pub in Norway, Maine.  (My hopes of seeing Jackyl tonight elsewhere in Maine were dashed, as you can read about in yesterday's post.) These talented and energetic lads TORE IT UP at The Oak + The Ax in Biddeford, Maine last weekend.  They joined the other band on the bill with them, the Brooklyn, NY-based (woot! woot!) Tumbling Bones for three songs to close the show out, with all seven guys from both bands on stage, burning the house down with kickass bluegrass.

Tonight should be one heck of a fun night.  If you are unfamiliar with Tricky Britches, at the top of this post I've included a live video I shot of them back in June, playing their original tune 'Arizona.'

Hope your weekend is going great, too.  Thanks so much for reading!
